About 10 years ago a professor visiting Vancouver was asked by a flight attendant to place his bag under the seat. He said “But it will explode” meaning it may burst open under the seat. In many other languages including the professor’s native tongue burst and explode are synonyms. This was the beginning of a 6-month ordeal. The flight was cancelled, the SWAT team was called in, and the professor arrested on suspicion of terrorism. The interpreters called by the government were not competent enough to explain that this was a bad misunderstanding gone terribly wrong. It was after the professor was dragged through the legal system and prison for 6 months that a judge finally ordered his release. In another case, the police called in on a domestic dispute arrested the father for child abuse, whereas their interpreter did not know the difference between using abusive language and child abuse. An incorrect translation may only cost you a business deal or money, but there is no reason why you should not get the best translator or interpreter for your money.
